What it measures
Anti-Müllerian hormone is produced by small growing follicles, so it correlates with how many eggs remain — the size of the pool. It is broadly stable across the cycle, which makes it convenient. It is genuinely useful for one job in particular: predicting how a woman will respond to ovarian stimulation in IVF, which is why fertility clinics measure it.
What it does not measure
Egg quality. Whether you will conceive this year. Whether you should worry. In women trying to conceive naturally, a low AMH has repeatedly been shown to be a poor predictor of the chance of pregnancy in any given cycle — age is the far stronger predictor of egg quality, and quality is what mostly determines whether a pregnancy continues. Women with low AMH conceive naturally all the time, and women with reassuring AMH struggle.
So what is it for, here
Context and timing, not prophecy. A low result in your late thirties is a reason to have the conversation sooner rather than later, and to see a reproductive endocrinologist rather than a website. A reassuring result is not permission to wait — it says nothing about quality, which falls with age regardless. Aethera measures it, explains it, and refers. We do not treat infertility and we do not offer IVF.
Key points
- AMH estimates quantity. Age is the far better guide to quality.
- It is a poor predictor of natural conception in any given cycle.
- Aethera measures and explains it. It does not treat infertility.
